Question #1: Can I get a framing estimate over the phone? Ans: NO
Question #2: If I order today will it be ready tomorrow? Ans: No, well probably not. It depends on if we have
the molding in stock, how many orders are in front of you, etc. We can do rushes but there is a 10% premium on those and
it still depends on variables that might be out of our control.
Question #3: What is the normal wait for a framing order? Ans: Our normal back up is about 2 to 3 weeks. Around the holidays it can become much longer. So, plan way ahead if it is for a gift and call to find out the current wait time.
Question #4: How is framing priced? Ans: Frame moulding, is priced by the foot. Prices on mouldings can range from $4.50 a foot on up to $50.00 per foot. This price does not include options like; glass, mats, filet and assembly of the frame.
Question #5: Can I use a frame that I already have? Ans: Yes, you are more than welcome to bring in a frame that you have. We can custom cut mats and glass to fit what you have. We are a full service frame shop and offer services from just cutting glass for you to doing complete layouts. We are more than happy to work with you on any unique projects. No job to small or to big, we hope.
Question #6: Can I get an estimate in store? Ans: Yes, come into the store with the piece that you want framed and we can help you design a frame that suites your needs. If you have a budget that you are trying to stay within then let us know before we start pulling samples that may exceed that limit.
Question #7: Are there different types of glass? Ans: Yes, we have the following in stock: Plexiglas, Regular glass, Museum glass and Conservation glass. Each of these types of glass are also available in a reflection control finish to help cut down on glare off the glass. Prices of glass vary greatly. Regular glass is the least expense while the museum glass is over 200% more costly.
Question #8: Do you frame needlework? Ans: Yes, we also make sure it is mounted correctly.
Question #9: How is needlework mounted? Ans: We use a technique called pinning. This means that the work is pinned to the foam core backing without the use of any adhesives. We do not use adhesives because of the high risk of permanently discoloring or damaging the artwork We will also do the blocking if it is needed.
Question #10: Why is mat board used at all? Ans: Besides the decorative variety that colored and textured mat boards offer they also provide an important function. Mat board is just thick enough to allow a small space for air to circulate between the artwork and the glass. This space helps minimize the chance of moisture accumulating on the art and damaging it.
Question #11: Why are some mat boards much more expensive than others? Ans: There are basically two types of mat boards available. One is regular mat board which is made up of paper products. This type of mat board tends to have a slight acid content which means that the board itself may yellow with age and the color of the board may fade quicker than they should. But, more importantly is that the acid in the board may discolor the artwork that it is up against.
The next type of mat board is called, "conservation board". Conservation board is typically made up of material other than paper and is considered acid free. This means that the board will not damage the artwork that it is up against and that the color of the board itself should stay intact for a much longer period of time. Conservation mat boards are much more expensive but you have to weigh the advantages against the value of what you are framing.
As a standard practice Elsiebee uses a product called "foam core" for backing in all of the framing we do. Foam core is acid free and is very resistant to moisture damage. Many shops use standard card board for backing so always be sure to ask what you are getting.
